Spanish GP 2022

 

 

 

The GP of Spain is often one of the most boring race of the season but it's at the same time an important one.

It's often here that the team bring their improvements because of all the data they already have thanks to the Winter Testing.

It's also normally the first European one, even if in the 2022 season it was Imola.

  • Qualifying :

21st May 2022 :

In this qualifying session, we didn't have red flag and the top 3 wasn't really surprising. 
But we had a few surprises !

 

  • In Q1 :

The two Williams qualified last. As expected, Latifi took 2s from the fasted of the Q1. 
On his side, Alex Albon haven't had the same results as the last GP ! The car didn't seem to go as well as on the other tracks. 

Then the two Aston Martins were eliminated in 18th and 16th position. 
The ameliorations made on the car didn't work according to the plan. 
In the free practices, the car seemed to do good runs. But the car performance, in the end, hasn't improved.

And to finish, Alonso had been eliminated in Q1 too. Unfortunately, he had been blocked several times while he was in a quick lap. So it wasn't really his fault.

 

  • In Q2 :

Zhou was the first one to be eliminated in this session. His fasted lap in Q1 was faster than in Q2, he probably made a mistake or have been blocked by the traffic.

The two Alpha Tauri were also knocked out. It's been a few GP now than the car seems to be out of the pace.

Ocon's alpine and Lando's Mclaren were the two last out. The British driver got over the tracks limits and even if Esteban had improved his time, it wasn't enough to go in Q3.

 

  • In Q3 :

The two Haas got into Q3, it's been a while since that happened !

Daniel succeed to pass the Q2, he finished only 9th after doing only a run.

Valtteri did again a good quali finishing 7th.

The two Mercedes had reduced the purposing of their car. Even if they are slower in the second sector, they managed to push the car to the limits and finish 4th and 6th.

The 5th place is for Checo ! If we compare him to Max, he wasn't as quick as him, but he can do a good thing at the start. 

Max finished 2nd, he lost power in his second run so Charles took the pole position even if he spun in his first run.

Carlos is on the 2nd row, he could do a good thing and maybe achieves to win the race.

  • Lando time deleted because of tracks limits
  • Charles spun in his first run in Q3
  • Max's engine lost power in his second run in Q3

 

  • Race :

22nd May 2022 :

for a race in Barcelona, it wasn't boring all the race ! We had interesting firsts laps with a lot of action and battle.

 

Highlights :

  • Contact between Kevin Magnussen & Lewis Hamilton
  • Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen into the gravels because of wind
  • Charles Leclerc's engine failure
  • Battle between George Russell and Max
  • Sergio Perez let Max pass by
  • Contact between Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll
  • Lando Norris's amazing race with tonsillitis
  • Fernando Alonso's and Lewis Hamilton's comeback

  • Drivers' notes :

I'm just going to rate the drivers for which I have information. Drivers who have been really broadcasted won't be below. Those rates are for the qualifying and the race.

Remember, it's only my point of view, we can have a different one and I can be wrong too !

 

- Valtteri Bottas : 8/10

Qualified 7th, finished 6th, ending with 32-laps tires. The Finish out-qualified his actual teammate and his ex teammate, he had a good pace during the race with his modest Alfa Romeo and managed his medium tires pretty well !

He wasn't really involved in a battle so it's why I don't give him a better rate.

 

- Lewis Hamilton : 8/10

Qualified 6th, finished 5th, Lewis had been out-qualified by his young teammate. But his race was undoubtedly strong, even if he had been crashed into by Kevin Magnussen in the first lap, he managed to go back at the front like he had been used to for a few years now. He deserves a 9/10 because of all his overtakes, his come back and his race pace but being out-qualified by George give him a -1

 

- Carlos Sainz : 5/10

Qualified 3rd, finished 4th, being out-qualified by Charles doing an another silly mistake in the firsts laps. It was a race to add in the bad one . What else can I say, his mistake deprived him to fight for the win that could have been his with Charles's DNF.

 

- Max Verstappen : 8.5/10

Qualified 2nd, finished 1st, Max did the same mistake as Carlos but he managed to keep the win. He could have had the pole position without his loss of power, he succeed to stay close to George even if  his DRS wasn't working normally all the race and finished 13 second ahead.

 

- Lando Norris : 8/10

Qualified 11th because of a deleted lap, finished 8th in spite of his tonsillitis. Even if Daniel Ricciardo out-qualified him, he deserves a good rate. Before the race, I wasn't even sure if he was going to finish it under the extreme heat. Rumors said he had thrown up before the start. He hadn't really fought or did something. However he had finished the race and it's already amazing.
